The European Parliament, on March 26th last, approved the EU directive on copyright reform, which on April 16th 2019 received the definitive go-ahead also from the Council.
The reform was approved despite Italy, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Holland and Luxembourg voting against.
Member states will have 24 months for transposition, starting with publication in the Official Journal.
The controversial articles 15 and 17 of the directive are therefore confirmed. Article. 15 provides the possibility for publishers to receive remuneration for the use of their contents by large online platforms. Article. 17 introduces a liability for the same platforms (which have a turnover exceeding 10 million Euros and more than three years of activity) for the publication by copyright of unauthorized third parties.
