The object of the dispute is Kraft's attempt to register the "Parmesan" trademark in New Zealand. This registration was opposed by the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium, owner of the "Parmigiano Reggiano" trademark registered in this country for over 20 years.
The "Parmesan" case is now very well known, given that in many foreign countries this denomination is used, even if the cheese does not originate from the Parmigiano Reggiano production area.
It is one of the most famous cases of Italian sounding in disregard of the rules on denomination of origin. Italy supports the fight against counterfeiting of national consortia that also operate in foreign markets in order to ensure the protection of the originality of Italian products and information campaigns aimed at allowing the immediate identification of the Italian product in respect to other products.
